Rodney Durso
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Rodney is a graphic designer by trade, and was founder and creative director of Stormhouse Partners, a branding and design agency based in New York. In 2006, while working and teaching as an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design, Rodney rented a studio in West Chelsea thus began his transition into painting and fine art.

Having created more than 300 drawings, paintings and collages since then, Rodney's work has taken on new depth and meaning but is still grounded in a strong sense of graphic organization, color, type and imagery that speaks to his earlier work as designer.

Rodney is also the Founder and Board President at ArtBridge, an arts organization that gives emerging artists unprecedented exposure by exhibiting their work on construction scaffolding.

He currently lives and works in Chelsea, on lower Manhattans West Side.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a mix of many things, and created in a number of ways. Sometimes it's a visceral exercise where I am in a zone fueled by loud music, emotion and caffeine, and other times it's created more as a meditation in an slower and organized fashion. Either way, the work is very much created in the moment, pulled from many visual references and from many areas of interest. My professional background is graphic design and branding, and keeps me oriented around color, shape, images, and typography. I love creating visual stories in my work, and ofter I have no idea what the piece will be or what it will be about when I begin. As the piece evolves the story unfolds and the work comes to life. Part of my process is in the naming of pieces, and as a lover or names, words and language, I often feel that a piece is not done until the name is crafted. I follow my interests and can be very curious in my themes, though the ideas that I keep coming back to is self exploration, self reflection and discovery. I sometimes feel that every piece is a self portrait in some way, even the scribble, spots, squares and circles. They all say something about me and move love of the visual art, organization of the page and the deep connection I feel to color and form.
