Margaret Withers
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Margaret Withers is a visual artist who lives and works in New York city.  Her paintings are fragments of stories found in an imaginary landscape that capture in the abstract the conflicting ideas of joy and melancholy, as well as community and aloneness in regards to the concept of home and communication.  Her web based transliteration project is based on cultural shifts in the 50 United States. Originally from Texas, Withers has exhibited her work throughout the country and internationally in Brussels, Australia, Berlin, China, Vienna and Russia. Her artwork is included in multiple private and corporate collections and has won numerous awards including a 2013/2015 resident fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center, a fellowship to the Millay Colony, and a 2013 USA Project Grant.  She is represented by Arcilesi | Homberg Fine Art in New York, William Baczek Fine Art in Northampton, MA and Sergott Contemporary in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I create different series of visual art that have their bases in abstraction and narrative, these sets alternate between stylistically thematic groups of paintings, photographic/paint mash-ups, three-dimensional paintings and digital art. Stylistically, they contain a layering of lines, geometric and biomorphic shapes, and are bold in color palette.  They almost always incorporate recognizable icons or juxtapositions of visual narrative elements, such as homes, telephone poles and other architectural structures. These icons are pictorial representations for habitation and human connection.  The larger context being the complexity of the physical and emotional space in the dwellings and the surrounding ‘landscape’.   Situating my artwork within a larger painting discourse, my art has been described as metamodernism, neo-surrealism, post painterly abstraction and flash narrative, to name a few.
