Justin Neely

Justin Neely is an artist, editor and technologist living in Brooklyn, New York. He spent his childhood in MIddletown, New York, in the Lower Hudson Valley, before moving to the Gulf Coast of Florida, where he spent his adolescence.

Neely received an undergraduate degree from Amherst College, where he studied film and literature, and a master’s degree in international policy studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, where he researched motion picture industries in the context of Russo-Japanese relations. He has no formal training in static visual arts, but applies concepts learned in a film studies context, as well as through other creative and critical disciplinary paths, to his work.

Human-computer interaction, working identity, art history, synesthesia, race and economic inequality are among themes regularly explored in his art practice. This active practice, begun in his mid-30s, is anchored in painting, but includes mixed media projects, writing and work in digital media.
