Janet Pedersen’s use of color and loose brushwork lend an abstract quality to her figurative and landscape paintings. She exhibits and sells her work in the Pacific North West and has been in group and ‘small works’ shows at Trestle Gallery, Site Brooklyn Gallery, Groundworks Gallery in Brooklyn NY and Dacia Gallery in NYC. Most recently she was awarded ‘finalist’ in the landscape category of The Artist Magazine 2014 competition. Her paintings are owned both nationally and internationally.
My latest series “Figure in the Landscape” is based on iPhoto images I take on the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I have always been drawn to an urban setting with people involved, an invitation to work with the figure in a complex landscape. When I capture an image on camera it is only the beginning of the process. I have painted plein-air for many years, and I use that experience in the studio to rework the image, often abandoning the original photo. The process of discovering a ‘dialogue’ between the figure, the landscape, new shapes, texture through layers, lost edges… reducing a scene down to its poetry. This is ultimately what I’m after.
