Ilyana Schwartz is a printmaker currently working in Chicago. Raised outside of Chicago she has had artist internships in the city at valued local companies such as Spudnik Press and In These Times Magazine.
This past spring she graduated with her BFA in Studio Art from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. At school she enjoyed studio courses including drawing, graphic design, printmaking, and typography.
Through her senior year thesis show she explored pattern, mark, and shape making through the medium of woodblock prints. As she began the process of carving people, her work ultimately took the form of a crowd.
My work explores pattern, mark, and shape making through the medium of woodblock prints. I am drawn to how the harsh lines of the wood and sectioned patterns can depict emotion on a human face. It is for this reason that I originally chose to make portraits.
