ARTIST STATEMENT

For the past several years, my artwork has focused on landscapes.  Mostly, I focused on unique and isolated landscapes:  the Madre de Dios River in the jungle of Southern Peru, the High Arctic off the coast of Svalbard, Norway, the Perito Moreno glacier and nearby Fitz Roy Mountain in Patagonia, and the Cordillera Blanca in northern Peru.  In the past few years, I've focused on drawings and paintings on subject matter closer to home.  Artwork in 2016 includes paintings of the Park Slope Blizzard, Tonsai Bay in Thailand and assorted drawings and paintings of other subject matter.

Paint allows me to recreate the colors, shapes and textures of moments that leave me in awe of the natural world.  I've often considered "why not just photograph these moments?"  The resulting image would be very similar and it would certainly be quicker.  But the painting process is the pursuit of a mystery.  It's a process of attaining understanding, of trying to decode and break down a breathtaking view into its basic parts and then painstakingly reassemble the parts again to understand what constitutes "compelling".  Sometimes the key to a heart-breaking landscape is the soft edges in the distance created by the fog or a specific shade of turquoise blue.  You don’t know the key, until you try an edge that’s too hard or a blue that is too ultramarine, and as you push the painting back towards satisfying with your brush, the mystery is solved.
