Brad Thiele is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Since studying abroad in Mainz, Germany in 2008-09, Thiele's studio practice has been focused on the manipulation of words and various types of language through deadpan humor, repetitive scripts, logic games and everyday experiences. His work shifts between visual puns as drawing and collage, large-scale handwritten text installations, collections of found materials, modern literary alterations and an ongoing drawing series within used-books titled re-visions-- all devised from an excitement for wordplay and a constant need to challenge the ways things can be seen.
I avidly seek out the means to manipulate everyday language and materials. Prompted largely by wordplay, my overwhelming affinity of logical reasoning and utter absurdity melds with language’s infinite subjective potential, realizing simple interactions playful in familiarity and fresh communication. Along with wordplay, deadpan humor, repetitive scripts, logic games and ready-made objects are my conceptual go-to’s for implementing this manipulation, giving way to semantically altered and logically reformatted musings.
Once devised, I carry out these extensions as objectively as possible, producing specific extensions of the fleeting moments or drawn-out processes they are sourced from. In this way, the works surpass initial wordplay into burgeoning expressions of common underlying themes each spoken through their own voice, and altogether give something more to take in and see.
