We are very proud to announce that the cover of the June 14th issue of international scientific journal Nature is based on a painting by one of our artists, Joana Ricou. The Portuguese artist’s “Our Self Portrait: the Human Microbiome” riffs on the idea of the human body as a super-organism or ecosystem, and so ties into the issue’s two articles on The Human Microbiome Project, an NIH-funded venture whose goal is to characterize the microbial communities within the human body. The biological themes Joana often employs in her art reflect her background as both a scientist and an artist; she says that the two are inseparable in her mind. We say, muitos parabéns, Joana!
The above are examples of Joana's available works.
