Time is stretched and stopped. Reminiscent of a topographical aerial view, these internal landscapes explore a mental framework. Their excessive linear density builds up a tension between order and chaos. Microcosms of existing worlds turn into portals to something else.
Fluorescent colors serve as catalysts, activating areas of space in concert with the obsessive compilation of organic forms and patterns. These drawing/ painting hybrids are based on intuitive gestures and unexamined feelings.
Intricate networks are repeated with varying levels of speed and legibility. The images are blurred, both revealed and concealed with multiple washes of color. These complex maskings both display and obscure a tangible nervous energy.
The mark making is seemingly familiar and becomes an exploration of the passage of time. Marks scratched in the surface record both urgency and fleeting memory. The surfaces become an almost static blur from a distance, but pull the viewer in to closer looking at something more primal, diaristic, specific.
Both ugly and beautiful, seductive color becomes jarring, difficult to decode. Delicate networks of line are contrasted with an unsophisticated and aggressive handling of thicker paint. The works aim for some personal fusion of grace and vulgarity, become unstable circulatory systems both grotesque and vulnerable. Like our culture, they are over-stimulated by sentiment and consumption, and move toward collapse.
